The ability to affordably store and easily access large quantities of data has only become possible in the past couple of decades. This has coincided with a huge increase in the amount of data society generates – but how should it be analysed in order to draw useful conclusions? The sheer quantity and continuous increase in all forms of data can become overwhelming. This is where data analytics comes in, using sophisticated statistical and mathematical techniques, run on powerful computers and applied to extremely large datasets. This module examines what data analytics is and how it is used, its main categories and most popular techniques and how it differs from traditional research.
