Gap-fill guidance

Any gaps between the content of these qualifications and the Level 4 exam standards need to be filled by structured learning. The CISI has mapped how much and what type of qualification gap-fill advisers need to undertake.

Gap-fill guidance

Advisers in the UK or Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man holding the below qualifications can complete gap-fill to meet the RDR qualification requirements. We recommend Structured Learning to fill top-up gaps for advisers possessing qualifications recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for RDR qualification purposes.

Individual gap-fill factsheets are available for the following:

PCIAM gap-fill factsheet
LSE gap-fill factsheet
IAC gap-fill factsheet
CWMQ gap-fill factsheet
CISI Diploma gap-fill factsheet

Advisers whose only evidence is the designation MSI Dip should follow the gap-fill guidance as for the LSE exams. Advisers who hold the Level 6 Diploma should complete the relevant gap-fill for their combination of units.

Advisers with PCIAM and IMC (Level 3) have a small gap to fill for Securities which can be filled with reading. Please note, gap-fill is still required for some of the core and specialist areas, and the gap-fill factsheet should be referred to above.

Information for CISI members holding CII qualifications is available here.

Qualification and gap-fill verification

We will review and verify qualifications and gap-fill verification accepted as part of the SPS application process, unless this part of the RDR requirement has been previously verified. We are able to provide verification for individuals that they hold a qualification that satisfies the qualification requirement of the RDR, and that they have completed appropriate qualifications and gap-fill.

Gap-fill forms part of RDR affected member's CPD logs. CISI gap-fill activities are auto logged and members can add non-CISI gap-fill activities and evidence, before submitting, via the CPD log, for verification. Access the CPD log.

CISI approved gap-fill providers

Individuals who attend gap-fill courses by the providers listed below and can provide a certificate of attendance will be deemed to have filled the relevant gaps.

A number of our accredited training partners also offer training for the Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD). As the IAD is fully RDR compliant, training for any of its units is acceptable as gap-fill training for that subject. The IAD training will, in many cases, go beyond what is required for gap-fill and you should investigate the alternatives with the training provider.

The gap-fill and its corresponding IAD unit are detailed below:

  • Financial Services, Regulation & Ethics = Level 4: UK Regulation & Professional Integrity
  • Investment Principles & Risk = Level 4: Investment, Risk & Taxation
  • Personal Taxation = Level 4: Investment, Risk & Taxation
  • Securities = Level 4: Securities
  • Derivatives = Level 4: Derivatives
  • Retail Investment Products and Friendly Society Tax Exempt Policies = Level 4: Financial Planning & Advice, or Level 5: Private Client Advice
