Poker faces at the CISI Guernsey branch annual dinner 2018

Former poker pro Caspar Berry drew parallels between poker and investment risk at the event held on 2 February 2018 at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, Guernsey

Caspar Berry showed an audience of over 230 guests how to recognise the difference between a calculated risk and a reckless gamble, using skills he gained in his previous career as a professional poker player. He believes there’s a long way between the edge of our comfort zone and the acceptable limits of risk in almost any organisation. He explained how to combat the fear of short-term failure using practical insights into the science of decision-making.

Guests contributed £1,618 in aid of The Little Chapel Foundation, which was set up in 2015 to rescue the Little Chapel and the garden at Les Vauxbelets, a property which was gifted to the foundation in 2017 by L'institute des Freres des Ecoles Chretiennes in Paris.

The Little Chapel has iconic status and its state of repair is tightly linked with the reputation of the Guernsey tourism and finance sectors.

CISI Guernsey branch president Patrick Millar, Chartered FCSI said: "The Guernsey branch annual dinner was a huge success. Both the Bailiff and the Lieutenant Governor were in attendance and were extremely complimentary of the occasion."

Some of the other top table guests were: His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder KBE CB, Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey; Pim van den Heuvel, CEO and country executive, ABN AMRO (Channel Islands); Dominic Wheatley, CEO, Guernsey Finance; Grant Wilson, chief investment officer, Asset Risk Consultants; Linda Johnson, Guernsey branch chair, Institute of Directors; Alexis Goater, deputy president, The Insurance Institute of Guernsey; Paul Hodgson FCSI, chairman, Guernsey Association of Trustees; Nicky Tustin, Guernsey Investment Managers & Stockbrokers Association; Sara Bourne, chairman, ICSA: The Governance Institute, Guernsey branch; and Martyn Dorey, president, Guernsey Chamber of Commerce.
