When it comes to serving clients in the financial services industry, the world has never seemed smaller, said Cruickshank in an interview for the Review.

“Gone are the days when clients used to buy from us in one jurisdiction but not others,” he says. “Now they’re looking for us to do things all over the world, to the same standard and with the same style of delivery.”

As a member of the International Integrated Reporting Council, Cruickshank is also at the heart of the industry’s efforts to meet growing demand from shareholders and the general public for more rounded reporting of annual results.

“They are no longer interested only in shareholder value creation, earnings-per-share growth and free-cash-flow generation; they want to know how it was achieved,” he explains.

'Brexit' signs
Cruickshank, who took up his new role at Deloitte in June this year after a successful spell as the firm's UK Chairman, warns that any UK company operating globally cannot afford to ignore the threat to the nation’s membership of the European Union (EU) posed by the Government’s promised referendum on the issue by the end of 2017.

He told us that the UK’s partners around Europe – particularly those in northern European countries, such as Germany and the Netherlands – “are very worried about the prospect of the UK exiting the EU because, although we have our ups and downs as an economy, we are one of the largest in Europe”.

In a wide-ranging interview, Cruickshank, who joined Deloitte in 1979 as a graduate trainee, talks about his rise through the ranks and the importance of inspiring tomorrow’s workers.
