The Review is out now. Here’s a taster of what’s included in December’s magazine.
Improving adviceIn August this year, the UK Government announced a Financial Advice Market Review, with the aim of making advice clearer and better for investors. In the December print edition of the Review, we look at what this review will need to do to succeed. One area it will consider is the cause of the ‘gap’ that prevents people on lower incomes, or those without savings, from being able to afford financial advice. Will changes to regulation, as some experts believe, be necessary to correct this?
Dealing with digital disruptionThe tobacco industry has long been considered a safe investment, yet it is currently facing its first threats from digital disruption. As e-cigarettes gain popularity, we look at how businesses are trying to stay ahead of the curve, both through their own new products and by acquiring other companies in the marketplace. And the tobacco business is not alone in its plight. This article also explores how financial firms are working to keep on top of new technology.
Unmasking the clonesKeeping pace with digital change is difficult, but it is far from the only challenge faced by investors. The threat from fraudsters posing as regulated financial services companies is becoming increasingly severe. This year alone, the Financial Conduct Authority has issued 78 warnings on cloning. These fake firms are using the names and addresses of real businesses and advisers to trick customers into making non existent investments. In this feature, we consider how consumers can ensure they are dealing with real firms and how the National Crime Agency is working to eradicate the problem.
Bringing small print into focusThis issue's continuing professional development (CPD) feature explains why it is so important for finance professionals to help clients look past the soundbites of politicians and understand how new economic policies really affect them.
The edition contains plenty of thought-provoking opinion, too, including a look at what the future holds for income growth around the globe by our regular columnist, Anthony Hilton.
There is also the latest edition of the CISI’s academic journal,
Review of Financial Markets, which contains cutting-edge research.
