Previously in the UK, the CFPTM marks were represented with a superscript CM shown as CFPCM – 'certification mark'. The CISI requested that the marks be instead represented with a TM superscript: CFPTM. This request has been granted. The CFPTM mark is also used in the USA, so there is now consistent branding between the two countries.
The change is due to a technical issue with the CM superscript. Computer language unicode has about 65,000 characters, including superscript alphabet characters T and M, but not C. By changing to TM, systems universally will recognise the superscript and allow for it to appear across all platforms.
This means users will no longer have to make manual changes and/or insert the superscript, and will allow the CISI, and its suppliers, to represent the CFP marks consistently. The CISI has updated its Guide to Representing CISI Membership and Using CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM and CFPTM Marks, which provides comprehensive information for CFPTM professionals.

All future material released by the CISI will include the TM superscript. We encourage all CFPTM professionals to implement the new branding as soon as possible. However, we understand that you may be unable to update your business cards, letterhead and/or marketing collateral until your next print run is required.
All other branding requirements for use of the CFPTM marks remain as before, such as using them as an adjective with one of the approved nouns. We appreciate your compliance with this important change to these marks.
