Getting into finance with the CISI's Insight events

In October 2015, the CISI’s employer outreach programme continued with two Insight events for students studying CISI qualifications in school and college

The CISI's recent Insight events provided students with the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with leading industry practitioners to gain insights into the large spectrum of roles within the investments industry. The week started at the CISI’s offices with an Introduction to Financial Services. The students heard accounts of various practitioners’ careers and daily roles and responsibilities, including a day in the life of an apprentice at J.P. Morgan.

Students networked with a variety of practitioners (pictured below left), including Niall Pearson, a Corporate Broker at Hybridan; Stewart Lancaster, Chartered FCSI, an Operational Risk & Control Manager at Ruffer; Kate Nathoo, Client Director at Thesis Asset Management and Jon Gould, CFA Investment Manager at Psigma (pictured below right). During the afternoon the students were given an in-depth tour of the trading floor at Winterflood Securities, and found out all about the markets from Gareth Henderson, an equity trader.

The next two days were run in collaboration with Investment 2020 and were held at Henderson Global Investors and M&G Investments City of London Offices. Students participated in a range of activities, ranging from practical team building tasks to a more complex problem solving activity which required careful planning, application of theoretical approaches and critical thinking to achieve justified solutions. The event helped students to start building up a professional network, as well as forming new friendships with those holding a similar interest in the investments industry. They developed soft skills in communication, organisation, team working, and problem solving, and spoke to the many apprentices/trainees to get first-hand information about the opportunities available to them.

We are now looking forward to the programme of activities continuing in February – one of which will be in collaboration with Investment 2020 and the others will be run by the Institute.
