The question I get asked most by my clients is, “How do we generate more on-target leads?”

Here’s my experience, but I worry you’re not going to like it, because it doesn’t fit with what we’ve been told repeatedly by marketers.

In my consulting work and on my Uncover Your Business Potential course I focus on simply getting businesses doing the basics well.

What are the basics?

• Know who you serve - avoid being a generalist
• Identify the top 5 issues for the clients you serve
• Have a clear proposition that you offer to them
• Have a Business Plan setting out your vision for the future and an operational plan for the next 12 months (and look at it regularly)
• Set 3 or 4 goals for each 90 day cycle and hit them
• Plan each week - choosing the important issues that will make a difference to your business (not merely responding to the urgent noise)
• Plan each day - making choices as stated above
• Get your processes working effectively
• Build a a great support team around you to do the “everything else” - remember, you’re the surgeon. You just do surgery.

When these things are working, more leads of better quality always show up. Every time. No exceptions.

And not a marketing plan in sight.
