Switzerland  The CISI in Switzerland

The CISI's work is guided by our National Advisory Council (NAC) in Switzerland. It consists of senior executives from the securities industry, who work on a voluntary basis.

The council works to further the CISI's charitable objectives and ensure that the organisation meets the needs of local members and the financial community.

The CISI has recently agreed a collaboration with the ACI-Financial Markets Association, based in Switzerland, to recognise the ACI's Operations Certificate as equivalent to one technical exam of the CISI's Investment Operations Certificate (IOC).

The IOC is a practitioner-led programme for administration and operations staff and consists of three exams. Recognition of the ACI Operations Certificate will allow financial services staff taking the IOC to include foreign exchange and treasury services in their specialism. It will also allow existing ACI Operations Certificate holders to expand on their qualification and increase their skill set.

CISI computer-based exams can be taken at a test centre in Geneva.

Switzerland  The CISI in Russia

The City of London is engaged in a partnership with the Moscow International Financial Centre (MIFC) to help Russia develop a major presence in the global investment scene.

London's then Lord Mayor, Alderman David Wootton, and Alexander Voloshin (pictured left), Head of the MIFC Taskforce, signed a memorandum of understanding which led to the creation of seven workstreams, including securities, derivatives and, latterly, education, training & qualifications (ETQ).

The Moscow market is moving quickly with some major initiatives, including in particular the development of a fully-functional central securities depository, and a move to T+3, designed to encourage greater foreign institutional investment in the Moscow Exchange (formerly Micex-RTS). Major reforms in pensions, and in the country’s long-term finances, are also afoot.

The CISI is leading on behalf of a quartet of British professional bodies – including ACCA, the Chartered Banker Institute and ICAEW - on the ETQ stream. Professor Mikhail Eskindarov, Rector of the Financial University in Moscow, Russia’s biggest university, has been appointed as counterpart to the UK team in Moscow.

At a major meeting of the London-Moscow joint liaison group at London’s Mansion House in December 2012, great progress was reported. The brief videos below – courtesy of the Mansion House and TheCityUK – outline developments in a range of areas.

Kuwait  The CISI in Kuwait

Global Investment House (Global) and the CISI announced that three Global employees are among the first ever candidates in Kuwait to successfully complete the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC), a globally recognised operations qualification.

The IOC is a practitioner-led programme for administration and operations staff. It gives individuals an overview of the financial services industry and its regulation, and provides a detailed picture of their individual industry sectors. To obtain the full IOC, candidates need to study and pass three units.

kuwaitThe candidates said they very much enjoyed the challenge of studying. They noted that the curriculum was well structured and provides information on modern industry standards and latest market practices.

Combining work and study was demanding but completing this qualification was worthwhile and they felt that they were better equipped with higher levels of knowledge and skills to enhance their value to the customers of Global Investment House. They chose to study the Global Securities Operations and Asset Servicing units of the IOC, along with the international version of the compulsory Introduction to Securities & Investments unit.

Mrs. Khawla Al Roomi (above), Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Administration in Global, said: “Professional excellence is a cornerstone of our philosophy at Global Investment House.  We recognise the need to ensure that we have competent staff knowledgeable of the services and products required to help the firm succeed. Our staff are part of our core assets and the IOC helps give them the necessary tools and skills they need to succeed.  Ultimately their success is our success.”

Simon Culhane, Chartered FCSI and CISI CEO said: “We are delighted to offer our congratulations to the candidates who have demonstrated their professionalism, having combined the challenge of work and study. The IOC is an industry benchmark and over the months to come they will be given opportunities to show the value of this qualification in the workplace and in their dealing with their customers, both internally and externally. They are an inspiration to their colleagues and to others in the financial services industry in Kuwait.”

Mrs. Al Roomi concluded by saying, "We at Global encourage all employees to reinforce their experience with such certificates supported and sponsored by the company. In addition to the three IOC holders, Global currently has 10 CFA holders and more than 30 employees applying for it in different levels in addition to other certificate holders in various areas such as wealth management, human resources and marketing.”
