CPD Learning Types

The CISI has three diagrams which demonstrate CPD learning types:

Below find examples

This element categorises activities consisting of an interactive or participation-style format. Specifically, it is a proactive structured learning element. All active learning counts towards the RDR requirement for structured learning.

  • Attending a training course, conference, workshop, seminar, lecture or CPD Event or company briefing/update/team meeting (with an explicit briefing remit):
    • All CISI conferences, workshops, training courses and CPD events will award a number of claimable hours dependent on the event type. The appropriate hours will automatically be allocated to the member`s CPD profile on confirmed attendance at the event.
    • Attending a relevant non-CISI training course, workshop or CPD event members will be entitled to claim up to and including six CPD hours for attendance per full-day training course, workshop or CPD event, or up to and including three CPD hours per half-day training course, workshop or CPD event.
    • Attending a CISI Professional Forum members will automatically be allocated the appropriate number of CPD hours to their CPD profile, for attendance and participation per forum.
    • Attending a company briefing/update/team meeting (with an explicit briefing remit) is considered Active Structured CPD.
  • Sitting an examination:
    • Candidates sitting CISI exams will automatically be allocated the appropriate hours for the duration of the exam, on delivery of their results. For more information on CPD hours allocated for CISI examinations click here.
    • Relevant non-CISI exams are also admissible, but must be logged manually. An exam pass entitles the candidate to receive quadruple the original exam hours, in recognition of the preparation needed to pass an exam. Sitting a relevant non-CISI examination the candidate will be entitled to the appropriate hours for the duration of the exam, on condition of achieving a pass mark. Details to be entered into the outcomes box.
    • Studying and revision for an exam must be logged separately under self-directed learning.
  • Accessing elearning:

This element encompasses learning activities of a briefing nature rather than a participatory nature. It encompasses any event attendance that is not classified as active learning because there is no opportunity for audience interaction - the events are purely one-way. It is a more passive form of learning.

Some reflective elements count towards the RDR structured requirement whilst others count towards the unstructured requirement. Please see individual examples for guidance.

  • Accessing CISI Infolink:
    • Members accessing CISI Infolink will automatically have the appropriate hours spent on this service allocated to their CPD profile.
    • Accessing CISI Infolink counts as unstructured learning under the RDR.
  • Viewing relevant verifiable webcasts, podcast, web-streams, television and online interviews:
    • Members accessing appropriate industry verifiable webcasts, podcasts, web-streams and online interviews are entitled to claim the relevant hours of viewing as part of the reflective unstructured learning CPD category. Members accessing non-CISI webcasts must be logged manually and evidence of having undertaken this activity must be provided.
    • Accessing CISI TV (webcasts, podcasts, web-streams and online interviews) counts as structured learning under the RDR.
  • Viewing relevant unverifiable webcasts, podcast, web-streams, television and online interviews:
    • Members accessing appropriate industry unverifiable webcasts, podcasts, web-streams and online interviews are entitled to claim the relevant hours of viewing as part of the reflective unstructured learning CPD category. Members accessing non-CISI webcasts must be logged manually and evidence of having undertaken this activity must be provided.
    • Accessing CISI TV (webcasts, podcasts, web-streams and online interviews) counts as structured learning under the RDR.
  • Attending informal meetings:
    • Members who attend a meeting, that has no explicit predetermined learning purpose, but where relevant learning subsequently takes place are entitled to claim the appropriate hours of attendance as part of the reflective unstructured learning CPD category.

This element includes all unaccompanied learning activities undertaken by the individual member. Specifically, it is a solitary learning element; it covers reading of documents, articles and publications either in print or online. All self-directed learning counts towards the RDR requirement for unstructured learning.

For the purpose of CPD hours members may log as CPD the number of hours spent on self-directed activities.

  • Reading industry relevant publications:
    • The Securities & Investment Review, Investment Management Review and the CISI Regulatory Update publication. The online versions of these are logged automatically.
    • Reading relevant CISI and non-CISI financial publications. The CISI retail financial book series is a comprehensive range of publications written by leading industry practitioners.

Development of Others concerns sharing a member’s knowledge and expertise for the benefit of others, in a variety of contexts. Some development of others elements count towards the RDR structured requirement whilst others count towards the unstructured requirement. Please see individual examples for guidance

    • Members developing and assessing exam questions for the CISI, or other relevant bodies, are entitled to claim one CPD hour per five multiple choice style questions written and six CPD hours for every case study style question written/marked.

Structured CPD

Structured learning/structured CPD must be a purposeful learning activity, ie, an activity undertaken for the express purpose of learning, such as a training course, or a company briefing on a new market, ie, where there are defined learning outcomes to be achieved, such as learning about a specified new market, or a specified new type of fund. It must be verifiable, eg, through attendance records, or through the independent logging of an elearning revision course. The examples are shown in this diagram.

Important Note for Unemployed CISI members using the CISI CPD Scheme

The CISI has introduced a concessionary policy for unemployed members using the CPD Scheme. This policy relates to the logging of CPD hours under the development of others learning element. We note that in some cases, not being in employment can make it difficult for members to log activities under this element, which is primarily aimed at the sharing of knowledge and skills gained for the benefit of one's peers. Those not in employment may not be able to perform these types of activities and so may find it difficult to successfully log a year of CPD. As a result, the CISI will remove the minimum one hour requirement for the development of others learning element for members who are not in employment. To request this and if you would like more information on this, please email cpdscheme@cisi.org.
